William Howard Taft
Born September 15, 1857 Died March 8, 1930. He was the 27th president of the U.S. William Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on september 15th 1857. He was a very active child. He was avid in base ball and many other sports. He went to the public schools of Cincinnati for his elementary and high school education. He attended Yale University and graduated second in his class of 1878. Upon graduation, Taft returned to Cincinnati were he attended law school. After Taft finished law school his first job he was an Assistant Prosecutor of Hamilton County. Taft had manny jobs before he became president, he was appointed Judge on the Cincinnati Superior Court in 1887, U.S. Solicitor General from 1890 to 1892 and then as Judge on the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court from 1896 to 1900. From 1904 to 1908, Taft was Secretary of War in the Roosevelt administration.
When Taft was trust busting he had an controversy between Ballinger and fired him because Taft was convinced that he was siding with private trust in his handling of water power issues.
William Taft had promised the public he would lower the tariff tax. Congress accepted a bill, proposed by Nelson W. Aldrich, that lowered the tariff only on a few products, but increased it on many other products. After facing opposition from the conservative, Republicans in the Senate against the second bill, Congress came up with a whole new bill called the Payne-Aldrich. The bill lowered tariff on some products, but also raised it on others. The bill lowered 650 tariffs, raised 220 tariffs, and left 1,150 tariffs that were untouched.
